Soda ash mining in a bird’s paradise

Lake magadi is a salty water lake found in Kenya.it is here that soda ash and salt is mined and also a paradise for birds especially flamingos and wildlife.

soda ash has been Kenya’s leading mineral export. It occurs in crystals that are called trona. Soda ash can also be referred to as sodium bicarbonate. Soda ash is used in the manufacture of soap, paper, glass, aluminum, dye stuff, curative dugs, papers, cosmetics, aluminum and fertilizers. It is also used in softening of water in oil refineries like the Kenya oil refinery at the coast. Soda ash is also used as a preservative for meat and fish where it is sprinkled on the meat and then it helps in removing water thus drying the meat and preventing it from getting spoilt.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Lake Magadi the natural spa that has healing powers, and strong skin anti-oxidant. The springs to its south that provides a unique attraction to many travelers. The springs bubbling at around 35 degrees Celsius would provide a nice spot to relax and bath.
  • Travelers are advised to bath in the springs in the evenings or early morning to well enjoy the natural hot bath. The northern part of the lake has more springs; these springs are however different as they boil at around 90 degrees - travelers would visit the place for steam bath and site seeing only.
  • The variety of birds in Lake Magadi is made possible by the favorable climate, diverse habitats and geographical features that make it a suitable migratory route for birds.
  • The lake is endowed with a wide variety of birds including flamingos and pelicans among hundreds of other bird species.
  • Magadi has a variety of wildlife including giraffes, zebras, ostriches, gerenuks, gnu (wildebeests), Hyenas, jackals.
  • When you go towards shompole conservancy, Elephants, lions, cheetahs and buffaloes are common among many others.

visit to the lake and the soda ash factory. Learn how soda ash is mined and extracted including how its processed and packaged. Learn the different uses of soda ash and the benefits of the mine to the community. Back to hotel for dinner and overnight.

Enjoy breakfast
After breakfast go for a morning drive around the conservancy, have a pick-nick lunch and proceed to the north springs for the natural spa experience as you sock in the worm medicinal spring waters, or visit the southern springs for a steam bath in the midst of natures paradise. Drive back to the hotel for dinner and overnight at the hotel.

After breakfast check out from the hotel. Drive through olorgesailie pre historic site which has excellently preserved biological and cultural evidence about the evolution of man.
